Webbing: look and feel along the full length for cuts, frays, burns, chemical damage, hardened or glazed areas and UV fading. Stitching: check for pulled, cut or abraded threads, especially at the D ring and buckles. Hardware: D rings, buckles and adjusters free of cracks, corrosion and distortion, working smoothly. Lanyard: rope or webbing undamaged, energy absorber pouch intact and not deployed, connectors closing and locking. Labels: legible, with serial number and date, and the equipment within its inspection date.
Formal inspection and lifespan
Beyond the daily check, a competent person carries out a detailed inspection at intervals set by the manufacturer and the risk assessment, commonly every six months in harsh environments and at least yearly otherwise, with a written record. Manufacturers typically state a maximum service life, often around ten years from manufacture for textile components, shorter for heavy use. Any harness or lanyard that has arrested a fall is destroyed.
Anchors and rescue
A harness is only as strong as its anchor point, which must be rated for fall arrest loads and positioned to limit the fall distance and avoid a swing into structures.
